Downloaded the binary packages from oracular-proposed and verified that
they're not compressed:
$ file linux-firmware_20240913.gita34e7a5f-0ubuntu2.2_*
linux-firmware_20240913.gita34e7a5f-0ubuntu2.2_amd64.deb: Debian binary
package (format 2.0), with control.tar
linux-firmware_20240913.gita
Downloaded the binary packages from noble-proposed and verified that
they're not compressed:
$ file linux-firmware_20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.6_*
linux-firmware_20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.6_amd64.deb: Debian binary
package (format 2.0), with control.tar

Hello Juerg, or anyone else affected,
Accepted linux-firmware into oracular-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
firmware/20240913.gita34e7a5f-0ubuntu2.2 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.
Please help us by testing
Updates for linux-firmware also fail to install on jammy for this exact
reason. It's not my system that I encountered the bug on, though, but an
installation I manage for someone.

Firmwares on jammy are uncompressed so we have to compress the deb
binaries, otherwise they will be humongous. I'm still not clear on the
exact reason for the decompression problem so maybe not that.

linux-firmware binary packages contain only compressed blobs. There's no
need to (re-) compress the binary debian packages. In fact decompression
at package installation time could cause problems which results in
package installation failures.
