On Ubuntu 20.04, WiFi won't authenticate after the upgrade, and I had to
"forget" it, then reenter the password. Much less severe, but it would
be a problem for those who don't know what to do.

So I tried removing the line, which worked, but introduced another
problem: I can't access the APs, no matter which password I provide.

>From backport-iwlwifi-dkms 7906-0ubuntu4 and on, a OBSOLETE_BY="5.0.0"
parameter is added in bug 1859389. So you do have backport-iwlwifi-dkms
automatically installed due to modaliases match, but it's not in action.
This is expected, and that's why removing it won't help.

And, could you also test kernel in
https://people.canonical.com/~acelan/bugs/lp1865829/ ? Install all to
deb files. You should have DKMS package removed/deactivated while
testing it.
