Almost a year after Nial's comment above, 16.04 is at LTS and yet this
is STILL an issue for me. His suggestion worked, but caused another
issue: my chosen resolution settings no longer stick. I go into Display
Configuration, change it to my monitor's native resolution (1440x900)
and click Apply, w
for those who still need to fix this, create a file (if it does not
exist) in /etc called sddm.conf
in it add this:
[Autologin]
User=YourLogonID
Session=plasma.desktop
replacing YourLogonID with whatever user name you want to auto logon.

I upgraded to 16.04 from 15.10 today and requested auto login, but it
always requests password. I also used the system settings to set auto
login, but it still requests password.
