Raring (kernel 3.8) also exhibits this bug. Quantal did not (kernel 3.5). Radeon HD 5650/5750 / 6530M/6550M (someone on the internet says Radeon dropped all HD support) Grub can be seen, but xorg graphics does not work with or without fglrx on Raring and Saucy. Reverting to 12.04 with LTS upgrad

removing 'quiet nosplash' from the live image boot params showed some text up until 'loading initrd', then a quick scroll of unreadable text before the screen went blank, and ctrl+alt+f* didn't work to switch VTs/away from blank. there was no vt.handoff or gfxpayload entries in the live image boot
