Ok, uninstalled thermald version 1.7 on Ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.4.0-21-generic)
and installed version 1.5 from Ubuntu 16.04.
Ran for several hours under various loads, some gaming included, all was fine.
Closed the lid, the laptop went to sleep, opened after couple of hours ->
laptop immediately
I've kept both, will give it a try soon.

So, running 16.04.1 with 4.4.0-21-generic since October, 22 - fans work just
fine and laptop is more silent in general. Today tried to install exactly the
same kernel - 4.4.0-21-generic in 18.04. Installed ok, but it freezes just
after booting, even in single-user mode, with both nvidia and nouv
5 days ago I've installed Ubuntu 16.0.1 with kernel 4.4.0-21-generic on
the second disk. No updates to kernel or libs were installed. So far no
fan issue appeared. Also, 16.04 correctly goes to sleep when lid is
closed which was not always the case with 18.04.

With nouveau driver and 3d-party software dropped (asus_fan.ko and nbfc)
the issue is the same.

1) On 16.04 I was using nvidia driver from Ubuntu packages, but can't really
remember what version. I'm not sure if the history of package installation is
recorded somewhere.
On the other hand, I can try running 16.04 from USB stick with several
different versions of the driver.

Thank you for looking into it. Can't answer yet - I'll have to boot 4.4
kernel and run it for two days at least to make sure - going to start
tonight. Also will attach more logs - apport-collect didn't work with
mainline kernel.
