This was the solution that got VMWare Player 12.5.9 working properly on

I think the poster here [1] and here [2] are the same person. That
person mentions in the Lenovo thread [2] that the "sudo hda-verb
/dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1d SET_PIN_WIDGET_CONTROL 0x0" command is temporary,
and to permanently apply it the method mentioned in the same Lenovo
thread needs to be done.

Thank you Joseph, the upstream kernel from months ago was the cause of
the issue. I had completely forgotten about it being there and did not
recognise the change in version numbering as significant.

I expect I got the kernel the same way I get most of my kernels, though
an `apt-get upgrade`. Although I did try and compile a kernel a while
ago... I wonder if that got left around as an install option and it was
so long since I last rebooted I forgot about it!

It does show that there was some kind of problem with the upgrade

At some point a software upgrade has switched me back to an older
kernel. I was checking uname -r after any reboot following a kernel
package update to check I was loaded in the correct way but I missed
when this switched. To further complicate things I used purge-old-
kernels to free up space on

kernel for a week. I have just hit bug#1462308 which seems to report a
