Using an NVIDIA GTX 1080 on 20.04 with the latest daily image I can confirm this bug still exists. Removing the "splash" option from the /etc/default/grub file variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT seems to fix the issue. I too encountered this with automatic boot enabled, and it also occurs no matte
