I also suffer from this bug. I have used 12.10 for the past year and upgraded to 14.04 but aside from the fact that it seemed generally buggy this did not work. Going over all the versions between 12.10 and 14.04 revealed that 13.04 is the only one where the brightness keys still work. After that t
