I should also add that printing was ok in 3.13.0-61 ,63, 65 stopped in
3.13.0-66, was ok in 3.13.0-68, and stopped in 3.13.0-71 and all others
after that including 3.13.0-77.
It woud seem that what ever bug was introduced in 3.13.0-66 and fixed in
3.13.0-68 and then regressed in 3.13.0-71 needs

My Canon MX870 was printing ok in Ubuntu 14.04 till maintenance install
of kernels after 3.13.0-68-generic.
I'm currently running kernel 3.13.0-74-generic and if I want to print I
have to reboot and select 3.13.0-68-generic.
When I start a print in later kernels with the bug
I have the same issue in Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS. Printing to my Canon MX870
was fine in 3.13.0-68-generic but Ive been unable to print using any of
the later kernels including 3.13.0-74-generic which is the latest I have
installed.
