I have made an older version of the kernel immutable to prevent its
deletion, because the newer kernels will not boot. This has the side
effect of preventing hardlinks, which caused an error message. I don't
know if this is related.

IPIP tunnels packets are unknown to device,
This appears to be affecting me as well. No adverse effects noticed so far, it
just gives me the same message you posted in the .xsession-errors file.
Using 14.10, unity desktop, installed a week ago.
