This isn't a bug. If everyone here has a common PCIe bus (Asus K501UW
laptop), then it's an internal hardware issue with the Intel PCIe bus. I
get the same hardware error messages in Windows as well. Multiple
laptops of the same model had this issue. Reported the issue to Amazon

it seems the fix is in proposed according to this page:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux. But when I enable the
proposed repository the version there is old, so the version on that
page must just be the source version, but the package hasn't actually
been put in the repo?
Clearly I don't
the kernel version this is fixed in is proposed, but has urgency=low,
which seems contradictory to the "critical" importance of this bug. Not
sure if that should be changed / how that would be changed.

Fix is to disable the "precide-updates" repository:

linux-image-3.13.0-63-generic:

This bug is due to a newer release of the kernel in precide-updates than
trusty-updates, but it will only occur if you have both the "precise"
and "trusty" repositories enabled (which I have because I'm using
libtiff4):
root@wildcat:/var/lib/dpkg/info# apt-cache policy linux-image-3.13.0-63-generi
I had the exact same error and the provided test kernel resolved it for
me also.
