I have the same issue on a Dell Latitude 5420 - and I can not use the
workaround described in the question - writing to /sys/power/mem_sleep
seems to be prohibited, even for a root user:
$ ls -als /sys/power/mem_sleep
0 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Mar 3 17:16 /sys/power/mem_sleep
$ sudo echo deep
Just confirming that this bug was not solved in my case by installing
the 3.18 kernel listed above.

Ok, I installed and tested the new kernel, and I have not yet had this
issue. [However, booting back into the old kernel after that also did
not trigger the behaviour for me again, either. (It has always been
sporadic on my machine.)] If I get the behaviour back on either kernel,

How do I test the kernel referred to - do I just download the two
relevant .deb's and install them? Also, should I use the generic or
lowlatency version?
