@jsalisbury Will do and report back...
Still would like to try this out on my own, but I fail to find out how
to build the hwe kernel on my own. See my questions above. As it looks
to me, the official documentation is outdated or incomplete. Can you (or
anyone else) please help?

The problem just happened again on this kernel (4.10.0.33.35), so the
issue still needs to be solved.

Thanks Joseph! Unfortunately the error persists after suspend (like
before).
If I want to test this myself, how can I build a kernel from
git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-xenial.git, branch "hwe"? I tried
to follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild and

I installed this kernel and booted it. Fan was running normal unless I
suspended & resumed. After it, the same problem happens again. So no,
the issue is not fixed in the mainline kernel.
I also checked the Git repository at git://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-

Since this is almost entirely a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1709616, I am not
adding any more logs. I guess it won't help since only a backport of an
existing fix is needed.

This is a copy of a very similar bug report which is currently marked as

@kleber-souza It seems like the issue affects both Zesty and Xenial

tag "verification-done-xenial" or is it sufficient the way you write it
above? Thanks for clarifying!

@chihchun Actually I could not install your kernel on 16.04 without
breaking dependencies. It requires binutils >= 2.29 (or 2.28, not sure
if I remember correctly) but Ubuntu 16.04 only includes version 2.26. So
I manually edited the config file in your archive to remove that

The problem only occurs after suspend and can be reproduced. With the

@chihchun Thanks, but I'd like to build this on my own. Which patches

I'm a user of the linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 package on Ubuntu 16.04.
Until last weekend, I've never had this issue (using kernel 4.8.x) but
today on 4.10.0-27-generic this happened twice to me!
If there's a fix for this issue then it should be merged into this
release pretty quick...

Someone marked this as a duplicate of #1274779 but I do not agree. This
one is about a kernel fix (which only needs to be backported), whereas
the other issue affects the xorg driver.
The problem described here is still valid for me on Ubuntu 14.04. Can
anyone please backport the fix from above?
