Actually, really strange, the bug just disappeared. Even with the Intel
graphics, I cannot crash X11 any more. Therefore, I cannot try that fix
any more, either.
I didn't even change anything, but here is what may have "fixed" the
problem: My
@Bryan - with "worked" I meant that I could open the file without a
problem - you're right, my statement was ambigous.

@Bryan, thanks for looking into this.
I have an Intel 4500MHD. I tried to reproduce this with two other
machines, one with an ATI and another one with an NVidia card, in both
cases, things worked. Strangely enough, it also worked using the life
CD.
What a strange (scary) bug. :-)
