After doing an apt-get upgrade today, the screen brightness bug seems to
have resolved itself.
Marking as resolved.

I'm not so certian it is a kernel error now after some digging deeper.
I've tried all of the following kernels:

One other point of note, is after the "Turn off screen when inactive
for:" duration specified in the brightness & lock settings has ellapsed,
instead of turning off the screen, it goes black (without turning off),
and the mouse cursor is still visible. Yet, the hotkey for screen on/off
does still s
