So, the issue seems to be solved in v4.12 kernel. I have been running it
for a week and the issue has not occurred.
Is there any chance that the kernel, and accompanying linux-tools would
be backported? I need linux-tools and I have issues compiling them for
kernels other than the Ubuntu stock ker

When using the kernel version 4.8.0, at some unpredictable time after
boot, the screen goes black, the compute fan starts working at top
speed, and after a couple seconds the computer shuts down (probably due
to overheating).
