This issue started after I updated from 15.10 to 16.04--I am unsure of
the kernel under 15.10 where it worked, but the system was up to date.
I will test the upstream kernel later today.

I am experiencing the same issue; when the machine attempts to sleep my
screen goes black and it becomes unresponsive but is still awake. It
