This is generally a case of a kernel (linux) or xorg bug.
Execute at a terminal:
cat /proc/bus/input/devices
One should see a touchpad device, like:
I: Bus=0011 Vend
Sorry, I saw an upgrade was available for my BIOS before I saw this, and
after the upgrade, I cannot reproduce the problem.

Cannot run the indicated command; logs are long gone and I'm not using
anymore this kernel (using linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04, which is
working fine).
Frankly I do think we may close the bug as WONTFIX, since the kernel
version is not anymore in the repositories, plus if you are running
xenial y
