SOLVED. By removing any acpi options added to the kernel boot parameter lines in GRUB. update-grub probably not needed but also did apt-get update / upgrade downloaded the 13.10-beta2 amd / catalyst driver from amd. first try at installing failed, it said something about missing packages / fil
