It seems the issue was fixed in commit 0b8d9073539e217f79ec1bff65eb205ac796723d
Tested it with our kernel (for simplicity reasons) and the panic was gone.

I will try to do that. I've narrowed down the versions for now (using
mainline kernel). The bug appeared sometime between 4.13.16 and 4.14.0
and was fixed between 4.15.18 and 4.16.0.
