I've done the upgrade to kernel 5.4.0-86, and the problem is still
present. Leaving a unsed CD/DVD in the drawer and unmounting it is
still an effective workaround.

The problem hasn't disappeared but it seems rather too hard to find what
you need to solve the problem. So I'm happy to let it go. I'll suffer
until I buy a new desktop sometime.
I don't know why, but I wonder if it might be a power issue.

I've encountered the problem on Quantal 3.5.0-26. :-(
My next tack is to try an earlier Quantal version - based on the bisection idea.
However, I have a niggling question. You said "Would you mind testing a Quantal
kernel in Trusty ...". How exactly? I'm guessing my base version is Saucy
(Ubuntu
(I meant just before Raring was released)
