convinced it was a hardware problem. Screen flashing (the picture gets

Back onto software-properties-gtk, the "this device is not working" is
very unreliable. I'm not sure how it works this out, but it doesn't
seem to account for the firmware being manually installed or through
e.g. the linux-firmware-nonfree package which also contains b43
firmware.
