Following the instructions on debugging kernel boot problems ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ), I think I've found a workaround and perhaps a clue as to where the problem lies. Workaround: Disable Intel graphics in your BIOS. For me, this was in Peripherals > Intel Processor Graph
