I have a very simple solution that solved it for me.
I have an Acer Nitro with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. After installing
Ubuntu 22.04, every time I attached an external monitor the Xorg CPU
usage was 25% - 33% even when nothing is running. This happens with
driver 470 and 510.
To fix it - run the

I tried to use my MSI laptop with and without external displays, with
battery saver mode + wifi disabled (ethernet connection) + Bluetooth
disabled; and the battery life I have from 60% to 10% is of 1h55min with
external monitors and of 2h28min without. So no drastic difference, here

I now tested with newer kernels: The regression is still present in
5.15.0-33-generic from the hwe-edge package for Ubuntu 20.04.
I also tested kernels from the Ubuntu Mainline Kernel Archive. It works
with 5.13.0-051300-generic and fails with 5.14.0-051400-generic and also
still with 5.18.3-05180

stable signal (enough bandwidth) can't be maintained.

Thanks for the bug report.
It appears your HDMI port is wired to the Nvidia GPU only so it can only
be used when the Nvidia GPU is active. This is normal for most laptops
with two GPUs.
