The new testing kernel -- 5.4.0-42.46 -- does work on my machine! Sound
works, mic works. One odd thing: with headphones plugged in, sound is
output at both headphones and internal speakers. And it's not immediately
obvious to me how to mute the speakers but leave the headphones on.

Tested with 5.8.0-050800-generic downloaded from kernel ppa. Got exactly
the same error as above, except this time the whole system froze and
became unusable, so I had to kill the power to the PC.
Additionally I got a whole bunch of new errors in dmesg like
[ 31.072963] SQUASHFS error: Unable t
So, with my usual kernel version, 5.4.0.40-generic, adding that line
(exactly as it was written, including spaces, " and ' ) during boot ('e'
-editing the grub), the touchpad works, but after the laptop goes idle
or the screen is locked, it goes back as a generic mouse.

$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$
Please test latest mainline kernel:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8-rc5/
If latest kernel doesn't fix it then we need to bisect kernel.

Ok, this mean it uses PS/2 mouse.
Can you please boot to mainline kernel with kernel parameter
"dyndbg='file drivers/input/mouse/* +p'", and attach dmesg here?

Same issue here. Ubuntu 20.04 fully updated running on a Dell Latitude
5590. Started after VPN connection over wifi. It works ok sometime and
then VPN and network stopped working in this case. Changing to cabled
connection just in case meanwhile the issue gets solved.
Pasting repeated log just in
Dmesg above has such a faulty resume. Laptop went to sleep `Jul 12
19:56:05` and awoke to a faulty cpu state at `Jul 13 09:17:14`
