I also have this problem on an X1C 6th gen (gray if that somehow
matters), non-NFC. I've enabled the Linux support for sleep state and
Thunderbolt in BIOS, and disabled AMT.

Oops! My post #56 should have said the other synaptics mouse is also OK
on 18.04.1 LTS (not 17.10). I also got the release of cosmic wrong - it
is 18.10, of course!
