Update:
With today's update - kernel 4.18.0-11-generic and new nvidia files - the 390
version driver does install however does not load.
see the attached /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and /var/log/gpu-manager.log .
What is promising is 'lshw' shows the nvidia driver as loaded/
sysop@x1904:~$ sudo lshw -C d
This happens with 4.20-rc2. This is fixed by the patch referenced in
this thread:

Unfortunately, this bug is not reproducible, I don't know how to induce it. And
it happens occasionally. It happened one more time after initial bug report.
So, twice in 10 days or so.
I am willing to test the upstream kernel but I don't know how long would I need
to wait for bug to re-appear.
Ugh, partial retraction. The above solution works for reboot, but not
for shutdown. I managed to get one shutdown session to show me the
console, and the final statement was something like "poweroff reached",
and then it just sits there forever.

compile under 4.20 and nouveau just lacks performance and the laptop is

• If the test kernel is prior to 4.15(Bionic) you need to install
I'm sorry I can't, I require virtualbox almost constantly, and also use
nvidia drivers... and according to the instructions provided, I'll need
to uninstall both.
This is my main work machine, can't really play around with things on
it.
I've removed the -39 kernel for now.

I cannot verify as of when this issue started.
I did use the USB devices in question with 18.04.1 (prior to the upgrade to
18.10) and they did work fine.
Currently I have no chance to test a newer kernel. Will do as soon as possible
It happens with USB-Sticks and some USB3.0 hard disks.

It is a fresh install never tried an older version.
I have tried the new kernel, same issue.
The asus-nb-wmi module is loaded but seems not to support this keyboard.
