Sorry about not finishing the bisection. I was dubious about the
prospect of finding a nice clean patch to cherry pick in that drm-intel
branch. But this is superseded now by the upgrade of linux-generic-
hwe-16.04 to 4.15, which does not have the same issue.

tested it and it displays the problem, and I tested

As I remember, I didn't have that problem in Ubuntu 16.04 but don't
remember which kernel it was. I was updating the OS whenever there are
new updates, so most probably I've used numbers of different kernel
versions. This device is my daily laptop and it's not possible to
install and test Ubuntu 16
There are reports [1,2] about Clock Speed of i2c bus on cannon-lake cpus
that could be the reason at least for other devices so I tried with
18000 and 21600 but it did not help...
