Hi, Dann,
I created a new bug and pasted the same info as above at [1].
Afaict, there is no useful information in the logs when link training fails.

Upstream backport [3] introduced a regression with ThunderX nodes (CRB-1S,

We have opened a downstream bug report [1], where we temporarily bypassed this
by pinning the kernel to 4.4.0-45.

Hi, Dann,
First of all, I think the bug title is misleading, as this issue happens on all
kernels we tested (4.4.0-45..66, 4.8.0-x, 4.10.0-x etc).
To be fair, we haven't this exact bug (or at least I don't think we did)
in practice, i.e. without running stress-ng, 4.4.0-x never ever crashed.
The
installed both packages as requested and gone in the same troubles :(

2) Please check the logs "ThunderX 4.11-rc1 console log" in [2] linked above. I
don't think firmware version makes a difference for this issue (we saw the same
bug with firmwares: T22, T27, T31).

Long ago removed splash screens etc during boot, so after the upgrade of kernel
and graphics driver, I could see that the "Nvidia peristence deamon" was
failing to start. It gets retried a couple of times, but after it fails for the
final time
I'll setup a test vm and see if I can reproduce this. In the meantime,
can you test the 4.4.0-69 kernel in proposed:

I put quotes around both, that must be what broke it. Then I tried to
fix it using live CD to re-edit but I couldn't make it stick as the live
CD couldn't update the bin. Mint always warns me of syntax errors so if
this did as well I missed it.
I'll try it again. I might just switch back to Tiger
Firmware changes did not help, but the following doubled my speed from
20mbps to 40mbps (still 50% lower than what I got in Windows 7):
vi /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Change line to
wifi.powersave = 2
echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/
Same here for xenial: 4.4.0-69 from xenial-proposed fixed it.
