and the whole problem is that, having run out of inodes, I can't install

I just got access to that Raspberry Pi 3 again. I saw that the expected
fdt address now changed to 0x02008000 in the boot script.

Thank you for the workaround. It is definitely more convenient than
executing sudo modprobe iwlwifi from the command line after every
resume!

Regarding #3, it is a fresh installation of this Ubuntu version. 16.04
works correctly. I have seen similar behavior when I have upgraded 15.10
to newer kernel (for different kernels).

I think the patch will be never backported to the kernel 3.19 and ubuntu 14.04.
Probably you should consider update to 16.04, it should be reasonably smooth
