As I had this issue upgrading to Kernel: 4.6.0-040600-generic x86_64 (64
bit gcc: 5.3.1) solved it.

We recently noticed that a busy xenial IMAP server with about 22 days
uptime has been logging a lot of OOM messages. The machine has 24G of
memory. Below please find some typical memory info.
I noted that there was about 11G of memory allocated to slab, and since

So, a strange thing happened. In order to mitigate the problem, I
decided to switch to having the computer hibernate instead of suspend (I
outline below the steps I did to do that). And then, on a whim, I tried
suspending again. And it stopped crashing, even after I switched back to
suspend complet
The mainline kernel seems to have resolved the issue so far. We're
running some IO just to make sure it's stable. I will update the tag
once we have confirmation.

FWIW, I have run this on a Xeon Phi system and not reproduced the
failure using stress-ng 0.07.16 (built in our PPA for Xenial).

I've backported the fix to Ubuntu Zesty ZFS 0.6.5.8 and this patch
solves the issues we're seeing. I've given it a soak test with various
zfs specific tests and I don't see any regressions. I've asked upstream
if this fix be merged into the main ZFS repo.

I just tried linux kernel 4.4.21 from mainline ppa. System settings
doesn't hang any more. So I am guessing problem lies in kernel > 4.6.

Update: I've tried to pass some boot options to kernel, from all of them
that I found 2 helped:
acpi=off - Boots but wrong screen resolution.
acpi=noirq - Works and screen resolution correct.
So at the moment I'm staying with acpi=noirq and latest kernel, I hope
this problem will be fixed...
