Yes there was no problem with my initial 16.04 installation. It did start after one of the kernel updates but I cannot tell you which one. I have just done a kernel update to uname -r : 4.4.0-45-generic with the same result. See attached screenshot of ifconfig and iwconfig. Previous kernel 4.4
