I added a couple of extra debugging lines in mux.c, recompiled and ran
it.

I am not 100% sure it's not the OpenSSH client. These two debug lines
make me think there's something more to check:

You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Problem: after live migration from one XenServer 6.5 server to another
XenServer 6.5 the Ubuntu VM crashes (see attached screenshot).
Affected verions (at least):
1. Ubuntu 14.04 (3.19.0-61-generic)
2. Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.0-24-generic)
Not affected version

I gave misc.c a quick skim before looking into the kernel:
int
unix_listener(const char *path, int backlog, int unlink_first)
{
struct sockaddr_un sunaddr;
int saved_errno, sock;
memset(&sunaddr, 0, sizeof(sunaddr));
sunaddr.sun_family = AF_UNIX;
if (strlcp
OK. I did just a bare minimum checks.
The file is called mux.c, the function is "void muxserver_listen(void)" at line
1241.
Two comments seem quite important:
/*
* Use a temporary path before listen so we can pseudo-atomically
* establish the listening socket in its fina

I am not really sure this is not OpenSSH.
The logs above are quoting both socket names. And the name, afaik, is defined
by the program (openssh-client) not by the kernel.
But I could be badly wrong as I have no time to inspect the software source
code.

I am reporting here the debugging logs I've got with "-vvv" and also
expunging all stuff not related to the bug:
OpenSSH_7.2p2 Ubuntu-4ubuntu1, OpenSSL 1.0.2g-fips 1 Mar 2016
debug1: auto-mux: Trying existing master
debug1: Control socket
"/tmp/sshcontrol-f1b458a85cd2aa9d5c115abc12afee9f485ad6b0
I'd like to factor out if we are missing IRQs on the host and inside the
VM, so can both be booted with kernel parameter: irqpoll
unfortunately this can eat more cpu cycles, so I'm reluctant to ask for
this to be used, but I'm wondering of the host or VM are occasionally
missing timer wakeups

Been really busy, but I did test the kernel 4.7-rc3 just now after a
fresh install and it didn't work. :/
dmesg | grep ath10k
[ 15.820119] ath10k_pci :02:00.0: pci irq msi oper_irq_mode 2 irq_mode 0
reset_mode 0
[ 16.590531] ath10k_pci :02:00.0: Direct firmware load for
ath10k/pre-c
Since that didn't work I installed this:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.158_all.deb
rebooted and the Wifi worked again.
