I have not had this happen again recently. It seems there was a nvidia
video driver update shortly after I originally reported this, and I
think that it may have fixed the issue. I'll report back here if I

The reason for the failure seems to be in default configuration of PAM
for SSH.
If I understand correctly, PAM is configured to enforce session keys revocation
upon termination of parent SSHD process:
