As an experiment, I removed the powerclamp driver and monitored the temp
sensors. The GPU never got close to high. The CPU has two thresholds,
high of 86 C and critical of 100 C. With the powerclamp driver, the idle

Update - I just started 3.13.0-39-generic from Trusty (on which everything was
OK). But now it doesn't work. I can control brightness before X is started, but
when lighdm starts brightness control no longer works.

I've noticed that my system is exhibiting the following behavior:
In the BIOS, the numlock light turns on, and the capslock/numlock/scrolllock
indicators reflect a change in state when I toggle those keys. The keyboard
also registers input. In short, everything works fine.

FYI, I have just uploaded a new debian version : 1.5.7-3. This should
close the delta between Ubuntu and Debian so a merge should not be
