There's no need to downgrade the kernel anymore. The workaround, which I use on
my C720 and it works is:
1. Open the file /etc/default/grub as root in a text editor with: gksu gedit
/etc/default/grub

Thanks for the backport David. I build some test kernels with that and
put them to http://people.canonical.com/~smb/lp1350373/ (note that you
do *not* need linux-image-extra for ec2 installations). This should get
pulled in as stable patch but it would be even better if someone can
confirm the test
Now experimented more *with* XEN and found the the VT option was not
enabled in the BIOS. After doing this and rebooting (meanwhile also
updated kernel a few times and am now at 3.13.0-32-generic) no more
problems.

seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include check
Got feedback from the Amazon dev I was asking. Sounds like they got it
on their plate. Have not heard any details though. But they got a link
to this report and might jump in.

Unfortunately I am on a production machine and due to the server hanging
and becoming unresponsive, I had to reinstall ubuntu 12.10 server edition.
The problem does not appear in this 12.10
But then I found that this softlockup problem has been solved and the last
working kernel version that was
