FYI while uninstalling upstream kernel to return back to original stable
kernel some key packages like 'dpkg' got removed so I had to re-install
Ubuntu OS.

The screen is fine after hibernate. In fact if I leave a window open
with $ sudo pm_hibernate ready to go, I can bring the screen back by
hitting enter to hibernate after a suspend/resume. However the wifi
disconnects after after hibernate/suspend. Will file/revive a second bug
report for that.

It seems that after applying some custom settings of color correction or
controls to a screen (GPU > CRT/etc), a relogin would clear up those
settings.
I've found a tip where removing the hostname prefix from these settings
would make nvidia-settings correctly load up the con
I should add that when the screen goes "blank" not only is it dark but
the LCD backlight appears to be turned off.

Yes, this package was preinstalled on my laptop by Dell. I removed this
package and installed a driver from sources using this instructions:

..we install the prerequitites needed to compile:
sudo apt-ge
