I wasn't very clear: The mentioned kernel patch is a red herring, it did
not cause the changes I observed. I am currently using the stock ubuntu
kernel (3.13.0-24-generic) with the kernel module parameter, and the
workaround works :)

Suspend/Resume seems to work OK for short periods <5min or so. Lid open
or closed. All tests and reports here are with the AC adapter connected.
The 2 failures I experienced were from suspensions of >1hr.

"First of all, I have installed SAMSUNG BIOS upgrades from within Windows 8,
then reduced Windows partition to leave around 40–50 Gb of free space, the
remaining free space on a HDD was allocated for Ubuntu's "/home" directory.

If it's relevant, my hard drive now seems to be quieter too - I'm not
sure when that started, possibly straight after when I upgraded to 14.04
but possibly more recently. (The hard drive used to be significantly
