I discovered two more requirements to reproduce this bug: free RAM
should be low and swap must be enabled.
To "occupy" most of 8 GB RAM that I have after reboot I allocate it from python

You are probably using the new intel p_state governor rather than CPU

See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2179879
The official ubuntu kernels have the new governor disabled, but the
mainline ones you are running from http://kernel.ubuntu.

Now testing the 3.13 kernel.
Now (12-jan 11:30) I have rebooted about 10-15 times, and the first two times
it flipped, but now it seems to be stable at /dev/lcd1.
I will keep the kernel and keep rebooting during the week.
However, I still think it is strange that it is /dev/lcd1 and not /dev/lcd0

this happens after upgrade to Saucy 13.10.
Gnome-Panel starts with missing top & bottom panel.
I am able to start the gnome-panel from First Terminal by running the
command 'DISPLAY=0:0 gnome-panel'

Chris, the original issue of black screens has not occured in Trusty,
which has other issues, such as the false gpu hang mentioned earlier and
just now a freeze during startup. Should I file other such bug reports
as they occur, or will that be confusing?

Christopher,
Yes, this problem is reproducible with all i386 variants: upstream kernel,
ubuntu kernels (13.04, 13.10, daily-live=); and I tried amd64 iso (13.10) and
it is ok.

Ok, that just confirms that the hotplug uevent that we send upon resu
Colin, will it possible to try with drm-intel-nightly (or latest
mainline) to see if the state checker catches anything?
Also it would be interesting to read an --enable-debug=full Xorg.0.log
to see what happened to that uevent.
