tried ctl+shift+backspace (alledged by some to restart display manager)
... no effect except possibly to make things slightly worse.
tried ctl+alt+F1

eventually got to a login screen
Using 12.04.3 to install and boot up the system, it works well.
It will use radeon driver and runs unity 3d without any problems.
So, I think the problem had been fixed by 12.04.3
