Well, the following workaround worked for me:
- remove current gwenview version (aka: 4:15.12.3-0ubuntu1)
- install the following:
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/import/g/gwenview/gwenview_4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~

Well, you're right - that's a no go, and most under the Images menu, though the
rest - Tools/Import/Export looking good.
