When switching back to single monitor (the laptop screen with resolution
1920x1080), the symbols re-appear, when I rebuild(F5) the desktop
So maybe its something with the multi monitor setup.

Ok, resolution does not seem to be the cause, as lowering the resolution of the
big monitor does not bring back the icons.
Also tried with a smaller monitor, the icons keep disappeared.
