What Plasma version are you using now? Are you using NVIDIA GPU hardware with
the proprietary driver? If so, this may be the same as Bug 419421.

Tested today,
for example when connecting to wifi, the circle animation on system tray spins
very fast. 100% cpu usage (one core). This does not happen in wayland.

plasmashell process also causes high cpu usage when the weather report widget
placed on desktop shows an animation while the weather information is updated.
