I just checked, it is still a problem. I had my own version of plasma compiled
and it worked. Version installed from packages is still crashing.

Can you run:
dpkg -S /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/kf5/kirigami/org.kde.desktop.so
It should return: qml-module-org-kde-qqc2desktopstyle
Then run:
apt show qml-module-org-kde-qqc2desktopstyle
And check if

With latest update the issue no longer occurs. Performing pkcon update and
installing the newer packages results in desktop displaying correctly on
start/restart.
