Are the changes you are referring to in 18.12.3?
It's possible that low memory and/or extremely long scrollback histories were
involved in the crash.

The code in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360146 was changed in 2017
which should have fixed that.
I can't produce any crashes on master using stress to get high CPU
