If it helps, what seems to be happening is that widgets (or fonts?) seem to be
scaling away from the top left corner. Like they are being sheared, and then
not fitting correctly where they are supposed to be drawn.

Actually, just ran into this: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/78488 which says
the problem started at 1.10.2-1 with one person claiming it was resolved in
