We still have the issue. We are installing from ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable.
The problem is frei0r compiled in this PPA.
frei0r 1.5+git201610091912~ubuntu16.10.1 Kdenlive (2016-10-11)

This can be an issue with your system if the AppImage is working and I can't
reproduce it as well. The next stable version will be out on the 15th (three
days from now) in case you wanna test and report back.
