Oops, totally forgot about this issue.
Yes, it is upstream related, either vlc and/or smplayer or smb(client?).
I tested in Ubuntu Gnome, errors are the same, but no problem with Ububntu's
default video player (

Seems like the VLC build itself is broken seeing as it cannot stream from smb
