The first problem that crops up when I installed these newer versions of
Digikam is that it causes problems with mime. The particular problems is that
the mime definitions cause certain apps to segementatio

Uninstalling all digikam images and reinstalling 8.5.0 fixed the above segfault
problem with gedit and bluefish.

Same story. 8.0.0 continues to run when invoked by the gui icon. This is what I
get running once in a terminal:
