it now worked, I did a reboot and restarting digikam several times and
switching themes, at some point it worked. Simple restart of digikam I tried
before already but it did not work. Ok thx

Start digiKam from the console and activate the debug output with:
export QT_LOGGING_RULES="digikam.*=true"
Then post the messages in the console until digiKam has started.

Look in the digiKam settings under Miscellaneous-> Appearance. And select the
Breeze Icon theme, either Breeze for a light color theme or Breeze-Dark for a
dark one.
